Tutor’s skills: I like to find out what the student hopes to gain from the sessions, perhaps increasing overall confidence, or extension work to go above and beyond what is being studied in school, or working on areas that are particularly challenging, such as extended writing.
Teaching style: My style is friendly and relaxed, and there is no such thing as a daft question – I want my students to feel that they could ask anything to deepen their own understanding. I do expect my students to engage and work hard too!
Overall many of my overseas students have strong maths skills and will work very hard on recall and factual learning, but find the extended writing much tougher, as intended by the examiners. I break down and scaffold the questions to build confidence and skills. By tackling the areas which are the most challenging for the student, together we can achieve a big overall improvement. Where possible I also seek to extend my students, without overwhelming them with overly conceptually challenging ideas, but enabling them to grow in depth of knowledge and understanding. I enjoy my subject and hope that my passion for it comes across in my sessions and passes on to my students.
