Maths & Physics
Education background highlights: I obtained my MSci Physics from Durham University in 2005 (1st class honours), followed by my PGCE in Secondary Science from Edgehill College in 2006.
Brief self-introduction: I am a UK licenced teacher with 20 years of experience teaching Physics and Maths in a large independent school where I now also work as Director of Studies (after periods as Head of Physics and Head of Science). I have also had significant tutoring experience in Maths and Physics, including at GCSE, A Level and university entrance levels.
Tutor's skills: My teaching has given me extensive experience of exam questions and I have strengths in preparing students for exams and in developing ways of aiding students to recall key concepts, which they tell me are very helpful (if sometimes unusual!).
Teaching style: My teaching style is friendly and relaxed, but I do expect students to engage and prepare well for each session so they make the best use of our time. In Physics at both GCSE and A Level, there is a heavy emphasis on Maths skills, so this is usually an area of focus where needed. In addition, students often struggle with longer written answers, which must be precise and contain the relevant key words - this is another area we will work on. As always, once students are confident with theory, they must ensure they can apply their knowledge, so utilising past questions will be crucial. I often say that to pass a driving test, you have to go out and drive (not learn driving theory for hours) - to excel in exam settings, you have to go out and practise exam questions, not merely read books!
