Phase 1: It is a 1-to-4 course. English Language GCSE/ IGCSE comprehension course, focused on AQA, Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE examination boards. All sessions will use example extracts and papers from the different examination boards, which I will tailor to fit the students on the course. 1 Explicit vs Implicit Extract from Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo Extract from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. HW: Choose a page of a novel - highlight the explicit and implicit parts. 2 Selecting quotations vs own words HW: Find an extract from a novel of your choice and repeat the task about a particular character. 3 Identifying themes and ideas HW: Add some more detail to your explanation. Make sure that it is focused on the themes. Use quotations to support your ideas rather than explanation or paraphrase. 4 Summarising A skill you will need for both English Language and English Literature papers HW: Finish your summaries 5 Terminology for analysing language and structure HW: Pick out three or four structural ideas and write a paragraph about them. 6 Analysing Language HW: Explain how each word or phrase selected is used effectively in the context 7 Analysing Language 2 Pick out the techniques in the poem and note down the effects. 8 Analysing Structure Structural Features and Devices Pick out the structural features of the pieces of writing: 9 Comparison 1 Use details from both sources to write a summary of what you understand about the similar behaviour of the drivers 10 Revision and discussion session The course will cover all the skills needed to obtain an excellent grade at GCSE/ IGCSE English Language.
