Phase 2: 1-to-6 course. Phase 2 content. This course focuses on the art of speech-making. By studying great speech-makers of the past, students will develop their own speech-writing and presentation skills. We will analyse the skills needed to make an effective speech and students will be able to apply those skills to their own practical work. By the end of the course, everyone will have written and recorded their own speech, employing some of the techniques used by some of the greatest speakers of the past and present Lesson 1: Text: Nelson Mandela Rhetorical technique: Logos Performance technique: Appearing calm and confident Content: All students will have a chance to perform an existing speech (or section) and to record it. Decide on the subject for your own speech. Lesson 2: Text: John F Kennedy Rhetorical technique: Pathos Performance technique: Pace Content: Analysis of Kennedy's technique - Development of own speech. Apply the rhetorical technique Lesson 3: Text: Emmeline Pankhurst Rhetorical technique: Ethos Performance technique: Variety Content: Analysis of Pankhurst's technique - Development of own speech. Apply the rhetorical technique Lesson 4: Text: Sojourner Truth Rhetorical technique: hyperbole Performance technique: Engage the audience Content: Analysis of Truth's technique - Development of own speech. Apply the rhetorical technique Lesson 5: Text: Malala Yousafzai Rhetorical technique: Contrapuntalism Performance technique: Put it all together Content: Final performances - recording and feedback
