Service Description

Phase 1: It is a 1-to-4 class. Phase 1 The main focus of the course is learning how to write fluently and effectively in English with varied sentence structure, ambitious vocabulary and a variety of figurative language. Scheme of work: Lesson 1: Figurative language – simile and metaphor. Object description Homework: object description using simile and metaphor Lesson 2: Figurative language – SHAMPOO and ISPACED Practise ISPACED to create mysterious setting description Homework: Use ISPACED and SHAMPOO techniques to describe picture. Lesson 3: Story structure: story mountain – five narrative stages Story blueprints with examples Five-sentence stories (using well known examples). Extended sentences. Homework: write a five-sentence story based on a story you know well. Lesson 4: Intro extended story writing – overcoming the monster. Plot basic ideas onto story mountain. Character – look at character descriptions – techniques. Create and describe two characters – appearance and personality. Use of opposites. Homework: create your own two characters Lesson 5: Story openings – look at different examples. How do they hook the reader (if they do)? Putting the characters into a setting – why are they there? Homework: write your own story opening Lesson 6: Setting – zooming in Using dialogue to move the story forward. Using flashbacks Homework: write the next part of your story, using dialogue and including a flashback Lesson 7: The Problem Description of monster or villain – look at examples and identify common techniques Homework: describe the monster in your story Lesson 8: The Problem Techniques for building suspense Describing a chase – look at examples and identify techniques being used Homework: write chase sequence Lesson 9: Resolution (overcoming the problem) Writing action – fighting the monster/villain Importance of planning an action sequence Building suspense – the hero(s) might fail. How do the characters overcome their differences and work together? Homework: write battle sequence Lesson 10: Writing an extended story 6: The Ending Developing an interesting ending – introducing a ‘twist’ – look at examples Homework: write ending for own story. Review of course
