Service Description

Phase 1: It is a 1-to-4 class. Descriptive Writing The main focus of the course is learning how to write fluently and effectively in English with varied sentence structure, ambitious vocabulary and a variety of figurative language. 1 Introduction: Descriptive Language We learn about DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE, thinking carefully about what it means to write creatively and to produce detailed, microscopic descriptions of objects, places, people, and animals. HW: Students are encouraged to take a BAD piece of Creative Writing and re-write it, making it GOOD! 2 Synonyms: Nouns, Adjectives, Adverbs, Verbs We focus on the importance of SYNONYMS as they apply to the 4 main Parts of Speech: Nouns, |Adjectives, Adverbs, and Verbs. HW: Practising the Core Technique covered in class. 3 Describing Buildings: Inside and Outside (Size, Shape, Colour, Texture, Surroundings) HW: Practising the Core Technique covered in class. 4 Writing with the 5 Senses We focus on using the 5 SENSES in our writing - not just SIGHT, but SMELL, TOUCH, SOUND, and TASTE! HW: Practising the Core Technique covered in class. 5 Using Punctuation Students will have mastered both the CORE PUNCTUATION MARKS as well as several ADVANCED PUNCTUATION MARKS HW: Practising the Core Technique covered in class. 6 Describing Landscapes: Setting the Scene The students will produce the OPENING to a story, now turn our attention to SETTING THE SCENE. HW: The students will produce the OPENING to a story, using all of the skills they have learned so far to set the scene and describe the environment in detail! 7 Opening Scenes We think about how to create a brilliant OPENING or BEGINNING to a story. HW: The students create their own character and write the beginning of a story introducing them to the reader. 8 Narrative Sequence: What Happens Next? Cause & Effect: how does one event lead into another? We play various games (DIXIT) to develop our writing skills. HW: The students produce a STORYBOARD for an entire narrative with a Beginning, Middle, and Ending, explaining how each event leads to the next. 9 Creating Characters We read extracts from some famous novels and think carefully about how the characters are introduced and described. HW: The students create their own character and write the beginning of a story introducing them to the reader. 10 Revision Lesson We go over everything we have learned this term, play some classic games and try a final piece of CW (a real 9+ paper!)
