Phase 1. 1-to-4. A key component of GCSE language and literature is recognising adventurous vocabulary in analysis and using it in creative writing. This course aims to introduce students who are targeting top grades to a range of difficult words in context. Over the ten lessons, students will be given an opportunity to use these words in their own writing as well as doing practice activities to help them remember the words plus their synonyms and antonyms. The words are selected from the more difficult of the texts found in 19th, 20th and 21st century literature and language, all set in paragraphs that exemplify their meaning. The course will also introduce students to the 1000 most difficult words and key academic terms such as zeugma, parallelism, anaphora, polysyndeton and metonymy, which are useful for those targeting A*. Lesson 1: To look at the words voracious, indiscriminate, eminent, steeped, replete and do tasks to embed their usage Homework: Activity sheet covering the words abound, technology prognosticate, abode, automaton. Lesson 2: Exploring the words paradox, realm, annals, compound, tinge, badger, implore, drudgery, interminable, perceive. Homework: Write ten sentences using some of the new words Lesson 3: Exploring the words laconic, throng, intrepid, accost, reticent Homework: Task using words furtive, felon, plethora, hapless, irate Lesson 4: Exploring the words pretext, fabricate adroit, gesticulate, vigilant, avid, cajole, rudimentary, enhance, nuance Homework: Write ten sentences using some of the new words Lesson 5: To reinforce the second 20 words in various tasks. Homework: Memorise all words so far for test Lesson 6: Exploring the words loathe, reprimand, lacklustre, caustic, infamous, jostle, dupe, incipient, inadvertent Homework: Use each of today’s words in a creative passage. Lesson 7: Exploring the words ominous, tremulous, repudiate, cessation, bristle, euphemism, mundane, condolence, stipulate Homework: Use each of today’s words in a creative passage Lesson 8: Review of previous 20 words and gap-fill task Homework: Use any words studied so far in a creative passage Lesson 9: Exploring the words alacrity, disdain, belligerent, intimidate, feint, pugnacious, promulgate, brash, scoff, belittle Homework: Write your own sentences using today’s words Lesson 10: Exploring the words: tangible, laceration, castigate, sordid, solace, aspirant, dregs, frenzy, scurrilous and review tasks of the last 20 words.
